was in hawaii. this is 15 minutes. >> you will excuse me if i am frustrated in the situation i find myself in. president obama, self and others and asked if there was something we could do to avoid in the fiscal clef. we have been asking the president and the democrats to work with us on a bipartisan agreement for months. a plan that would simplify the tax code, st. the deficit, protect the tax payers, and put the economy. democrats consistently rejecting the offer is. the president chose instead to spend time on the campaign trail. this was after he got reelected. a congressional democrats said on their hands. we have stepped away out of our comfort zone. we wanted an agreement. we had no takers. the phone never rang it. here we are five days after the new year and we might finally start talking. democrats have had a year to put forward a balanced bipartisan proposal. if they had something that fixed the bill, i'm sure the majority leader would have to deliver the votes the president needed to pass it again to of the senate and we would not be and then to of this miss. here we are, once agai

the president from the eisenhower executive office building. the first family remains in hawaii for the christmas holiday vacation and the president returned mid-week last week and spending much of the weekend in negotiations and try to push his message and he made an appearance yesterday on nbc's "meet the press." the house remains in recess with a statement from the house republican whip kevin mccarthy who asked members to stay flexible saying that today's schedule remains fluid and members are advised to remain close to the capital. votes are possible pending action from the senate, please stay as flexible as possible. our phone lines are open so tell us what you think about all this as we approach, within 10 hours of the fiscal cliff deadline, no timetable on when votes would happen in the senate and later in the house. congress is taking up to the last second. it could be well into the evening if anything happens. you can also join the conversation on our facebook page. what is your message to washington -- forge a compromise or go over the cliff? let's get to your phone ca

an electromagnetic pulse because a lot of disturbances in hawaii which is about 800 miles away. the soviets had a lot more experience than we. they actually developed -- we designed them but never built them, enhanced e.m.p. weapons. a single large nuclear -- i shouldn't say that. because it doesn't have to be a large bomb. because it could be a relatively small bomb that's e.m.p.-enhanced. a single appropriately bomb detonated three miles high over nebraska or iowa would prank et our whole country and -- blanket our whole country and if the e.m.p. lay down was robust enough, it would essentially fry all of our microelectronics. the grid would be down for a year or more. and your car wouldn't run and there have been a couple of books writ on that subject. one i would -- written on that subject. one i have read which is an easy read and i commend newt gingrich, he brought the author to my office and he mentioned this on the campaign trail, thank you, newt, this was a book called "one second after." i came to my office one day and there was a big book on my desk and there was a hand written note on it
